Pitchfork is Down!

29 01 2009

UPDATE: At 3:29 PM…

Pitchfork is back online!

After several weeks of intermittent service, it appears that Pitchfork has gone down. Upon entering the URL, I encountered a “Not Found! 6” message.. Maybe someone unplugged something, or perhaps it was simple overload of the server. Whatever the case, the music world can only hope and pray for a safe and fast recovery. Just so you know,

What will the world do without Pitchfork?

*Potential Reasons Why Pitchfork is Down*

-Someone spotted Jeff Magnum

-Brooklyn/Chicago/Manhattan are on fire

-Carles took out Ryan Schrieber (sp?)

-My girls? More like “my hurls”… … …

-The staff are celebrating Sacha Distel’s 76th birthday/listening to the Here We Go Magic album in the dark and deciding on it’s rating.. I’m guessing that the number being floated around are 7.6 and  8.9.

Please note: Pitchfork TV is still up and running, you can check that out here.

So if you need to waste those ten minutes at the office, or in your basement, here is a list of other decent music sites to read today. Check it out after the jump. Enjoy!

The News: Snow Edition

27 01 2009

-Wale is back in the studio! DC’s rapper (singular at this point) is apparently working with a star-studded cast of beatmakers including Best Kept Secret, Mark Ronson, Glitch Mob, Cool & Dre, Ryan Leslie, Green Lantern, Sean C and LV. Here’s the kicker, one of the other more notable names working on the album is Dave Sitek, you might know of him, he’s in TV on the Radio. While Sitek has produced albums for numerous artists, he’s never before manned the board for a rapper. Stay tuned for updates.

If anyone would like an intern for their PR company or Recording studio. Look no further. Check the About section for information.

-An essay by John Darnielle about his five favorite Mountain Goats characters (this should’ve been posted a long time ago) Here

-Speaking of John Darnielle, he will be embarking on a two-man tour with studio buddy John Vanderslice this spring. As always, it’s best put by the man himself:

“We are going to light out for the Territories in a van with two acoustic guitars, some notebooks, our soundman Brandon and a pouch full of charms against ill omen. We are going to get elemental. We are going to stomp our feet and hammer at the strings until we get what we want from them. We, a couple of guys named John, are going to tour, is what we’re going to do. We’re going to stand alone onstage and play our guitars and sing old songs & new, and then we’ll probably play together. We are going to sit side by side with our acoustic guitars like two out of the five guys on the Five Man Acoustical Jam album, only with fewer Tesla songs. Because the whole point of playing an acoustic guitar is not to unplug. It’s to get raw and draw blood.”

The News: Welcome Back Edition

7 01 2009

Hello to the new year. Here are some Fearless Predictions:

thosedancingdayssingle300-This is the year of: Overcoats, rye whiskey, Morrissey (every year feels like a Sunday…) and bi-sexuality.

-No longer will people enjoy Fleet Foxes, african-tribal style drumming on pop songs or Fleet Foxes.

-Vampire Weekend will end up releasing an album at the start of the summer to a 5.7 rating.

-Those Dancing Days will release an album that is both consistent and good.

-60s/70s revival groups will flood the market. You can do better than Catfish Haven. Please look harder..

-The Animal Collective song “Bluish” will be Pitchfork’s favorite song of this year. (Pending the quality of Morrissey’s album/A Spring Wilco Release)

An all out war in the Republican Party will lead to a three way split. Too bad…

we’ll think of more…

Record Review: Blind Pilot- 3 Rounds and a Sound

26 12 2008

Blind Pilot- 3 Rounds and a Sound

A friend recently told me that he’d met a girl, who at their first meeting/date/social event, mentioned that Neutral Milk Hotel was her favorite band. I told him to stay away, that she was crazy, deranged or too good to be true. When any person, well grounded or not, reads a record review that begins with, “and they listened to a lot of Neutral Milk Hotel, (or Joanna Newsom or Van Morrison or Times New Viking)” thoughts of songs on a grand and elusive scale begin to populate their brain. Fortunately for us, this album has nothing to do with Neutral Milk Hotel. More responsibly put, the band falls somewhere between The Format and The Kooks. Side note: TV on the Radio has to be the worst band name ever, on par with Satan’s Fingers and The Killers…  Books on Tape would have been a better name…

There’s no reason for a college aged girl not to like this album. It’s pretty and thoughtful-sounding, like a nice guy who reads for fun and who speaks with deceptive vulnerability. Add to that a dash of the wavering vocal stylings of Connor Oberst and you’ve got Blind Pilot, a perfectly mediocre excuse for a band.

Stuff Hipsters Like: The Holiday Gift List Edition

18 12 2008

Let us begin by stating that hipsters celebrate all holidays. The true hipster, out of work and slightly maladjusted, enjoys the holiday season and all that it has to offer. A combination of cleverer than usual gift giving and theme-based parties/drinks keep them coming back every year. As the last major weekend of holiday shopping begins, let us remember that hipster runoff began contemplating what to get on October 12th. Don’t you just hate people who get their gifts early, like in April.

Here are some gift ideas for the hipster in your life:

The Christmas Cactus

tf102-3This classic, and we’re not sure why it’s a classic, is both low-maintenance and prickly, similar to a hipster and his or her hair style on rave nights. Whether you water this excuse for a plant with actual water or PBR, it doesn’t matter… This plant will live, grow and bloom just like you!

A USB Missile Launcher

30531-99This is a PC only device. The last PC only device… Sigh…

If you have a PC, you now have something to hang over everyone’s head. This is pretty self explanatory. Missile Launcher>Computer>Press of a button>Warfare.

The $40 launcher shoots missiles up to 15 feet so plan accordingly. Defend your area Space Marine! Get it Here

Coffee Table Books:

28170138Coffee table books are very important. Here we have a huge Ansel Adams book, the Pitchfork 500,

a baby photo album and pens. Maybe you can get away without this one, but if you feel it necessary to impress check this out.

Art and Sole is a book by Nathan Gale about contemporary sneaker art and design.  The next one is titled, Vinyl Junkies and is written by Brett Milano. Both books will atleast begin a conversation. “Oh, what is that red book doing here?”

These books are designed for show. Do not look for substance and or entertainment.

Christmas Drinking Glove

christmasdrinkingglove2This gift is sure to warm the heart and hands of any hipster who receives it. A glove designed to keep your hand warm on your bronson and instantly turn you into the center of the party. Red, White and able to block the light.

From the Unemployed Philosophers Guild, these are the perfect three dollar stocking stuffer for your hipster. Peach Mints will play well in the south too.

Peach flavored ImpeachMints ™ Oh, the sweetness of a Bush impeachment can be savored if only for a moment with these ImpeachMints. Fantasize about sending Bush back to Crawford. Get them Here
