Uh-Oh!

3 08 2008

On July 31st, 2008 the house voted to allow the FDA to create an agency to regulate the tobacco industry. The measure, as one could have expected, has been met by outrage in the smoking public (by those who know). The bill does not give the power to eliminate nicotine or the product on the whole but it would ban the sale and production of flavored cigarettes such as cloves and vanilla cigarettes. In a last minute change of heart, menthols were exempted from the bill with the agreement that a recommendation be made on their legality within one year. Menthols reportedly make up for one quarter of all cigarette sales and are generally marketed towards two specific groups, young teens and African-American smokers.

Other regulations and rules under the bill:

-All outdoor advertisements would be limited to black and white to reduce their visual appeal.

-Warning labels on cigarettes would no longer include text warnings but graphic pictures of tumors.

-The usage of terms like, “light and ultra light” would be eliminated.

It might be the beginning of the end for smokers. As the years have passed many cities have banned smoking in restaurants and bars, even in Paris.

Here is an article from The New York Times regarding menthols

Recording-France… Truly, Madly, Completely

11 07 2008

Cameroonians, Cameroites, Cameroonies? Regardless of which is correct, the people from Cameroon in attendance tonight at work did not appreciate nor did they enjoy the house music that i had pre-selected for last night’s event. The playlist contained The Hold Steady’s new album and Of Montreal… Who would’ve thought that Cameroon____ would not be appreciative of such a great band and that the two could hold their own (steady) on a playlist.
Sigh.

Recording begins in eight and a half hours on the next big thing at Fabakis, Soldier on Dear Friend. Yay! Soon to follow the weekend of recording is a nice week and a half break from suburbia. A trip out of town and across the ocean to the lovely country of France. Four days in Paris, another four or five in and around Burgundy and then finally a few days in Nice to round out the trip.

To keep folks interested here are four random songs for your listening pleasure. Herein lies a track from the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot demos album and a live recording from the rain-drenched Radiohead show at Nissan from this past May. Then comes The Hold Steady’s cover of “Take me out to the Ball Game”, which was  recorded specially for the Twins last year and Australia’s favorite sons  giving you,

“a new beginning

a reason for living

A deeper meaning, yea”

Fabakis.

A recording studio, musical collective, record label, sandwich shop, basement, group of friends, and now a blog.

Established during middle school, Fabakis (For Asians by Asian Kids in Sweatshops) was originally created as a shirt company to raise awareness about sweatshop labor in Asian countries. Over the course of four years our interests changed and the shirts were abandoned. At some point during that time we took the metro to Takoma Park, MD to a small club called the Electric Maid. After seeing the ska band Rudy take the stage we decided to start our very own recording studio/ label under the name Fabakis. Several albums, EPs and relationships later we’re still doing the same thing in the same place, albeit slightly more official.

Now some pictures
