The Avalanches

31 07 2008

The Fabakis blog knew about The Avalanches new release a whole day earlier than Pitchfork.

And now for their writeup:

Avalanches Putting “Finishing Touches” on Second LP

Avalanches Putting "Finishing Touches" on Second LPWith just six words, a number, and a whole bunch of exclamation points, the Avalanches have managed to pretty much double the collective heart rate here at Pitchfork World Headquarters. Read it and rejoice, folks:

“putting the finishing touches on album 2 !!!!!!!!!”

Those words come straight from the MySpace of the sample-happy Australian set. For those keeping score, the Earth has not been blessed with an Avalanches record since 2000 barnstormer Since I Left You (released in 2001 in the States and the UK).

Will the new offering, whenever it actually does come out, be “so fuckin party you will die”?? Man I hope not, ’cause I’d kinda like to listen to it more than once.

Dear sir…

31 07 2008

Hi all. This is Jim, or, if necessary, westsideheights. This should be the last of these inane intro posts; apologies to the three people who read this blog. I probably won’t be a frequent contributor here, since, like Zach, I try to avoid saying anything that isn’t a fully formed thought, and I don’t have too many of those. When I do post, however, I’ll be doing fun and innovative things like using semi-colons and talking about things besides the hold steady. Thrilling!

And now follows the obligatory list of favorite things, by no means complete or in order, as always:

Albums: Elliott Smith-Either/Or; Neutral Milk Hotel-In an Aeroplane Over The Sea; Bob Dylan-Blood On The Tracks; The Roots-Do You Want More??!?!!?; Iron & Wine-The Shepherd’s Dog; Wilco-Summerteeth; Radiohead-Kid A; Modest Mouse- Building Nothing Out Of Something

Literature: The Economist newspaper; Swann’s Way-Marcel Proust; Crime & Punishment-Fyodor Dostoevsky; To The Lighthouse- Virginia Woolf; The Great Gatsby-F. Scott Fitzgerald; The Snows Of Kilimanjaro- Ernest Hemingway; One Hundred Years Of Solitude-Gabriel Garcia Marquez (though I haven’t finished it yet)

Movies: Wall-E/Ratatouille; High Fidelity; There Will Be Blood; Apocalypse Now; Snatch; Love Actually

Peace

Fresh new face

31 07 2008

Hello, I am flawedsoliloquey otherwise known as Davey. I am most likely the least creative of the members of my illustrious group of melancholic, yet sweet friends.  This is the closest I will ever do to a formal introduction, so here it goes.

I don’t know much about blogs, as I don’t know much about computers. My friends claim I am a “Caveman” when it comes to anything technological in general, for instance, writing on this blog as you read is an acheivement in itself.

I am no writer, and all my friends can vouche for that, however I do hope my posts can provide clear, knowledgable, yet concise information on whatever it is we are discusing or is brought up.

I was born and raised in the Washington D.C. suburbs and am currently a sophomore at a fairly large University in Philadelphia (thankfully it’s not Penn). My philosophy is quite different than that of my friends, being a nursing student I don’t have the opportunity to divulge ideas into a million little pieces. I see things and either get it or don’t.

However my advice for this blog is similar to those posted over the past few days. Albums, movies, and books, there is no particular order.

Films:

Cider House Rules

Almost Famous

The Lion in Winter

Albums:

The Creek Drank the Cradle- Iron & Wine

Transit Byzantium- Bill Fox

Highway 61 Revisited- Bob Dylan

Transatlanticism- Death Cab for Cutie

Almost Killed Me- The Hold Steady

A.M.- Wilco

We Are Selling This CD For Gas Money – Speechwriters LLC

Books:

A Hundred Years of Solitude- Gabriel Garcia Marquez

A Confederacy of Dunces- John Kennedy Toole

Everything Is Illuminated- Jonathan Safran Foer

Cat’s Cradle- Kurt Vonnegut

Black Like Me- John Howard Griffin

This is just a small list, and selected few. Welcome! Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.

Boy George cancels show and The Hold Steady hit #30 on Billboard

My whole chest burns.

Music News: Just because it’s here doesn’t mean that we care about it.

The Streets have released a new single. Google The Streets and find it.

AC/DC are in fact releasing thier 15th studio offering, Black Ice, in the near future. They’re also embarking on an 18 month tour beginning in October. The record will only be sold at Walmart stores initially in the states.

The Avalanches might have a second record coming out…

125 dollars will get you a limited edition copy of Madvilliany 2: The Madlib remix. The songs have been re-worked with new artwork. Stones Throw is only producing the box upon request. Order Up!

After Bows and Arrows The Walkmen went somewhere. (Louisiana perhaps?)

Two mediocre records later…

The Walkmen have announced that they have a new album coming out very soon. One can purchase the album via their website some twenty or so days early and the proceeds will benefit The Sloan-Kettering research center. Tell me if it’s worth it. This is what they had to say about it.

“All donations go to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in honor of Luca Vasallo, a friend to the band and a current patient who is seven months old and doing a great job fighting a very difficult disease,” said Peter Bauer of The Walkmen. “This is a very good organization that certainly deserves the attention.”

The Kinks frontman Ray Davies just finished writing a musical. The show titled, Come Dancing, is about growing up in post-war England. Come Dancing’ opens at the Theatre Royal Stratford EastLondon on September 13.

Jack White and Alicia Keys are in cahoots working on the new Bond Theme. It’s title? Another Way to Die.

There is a new Lee “Scratch” Perry single. I didn’t bother posting it.

Intro

30 07 2008

As an unreliable and not-entirely-necessary contributor to the Fabakis Blog, I would like to offer my first (and often wrong or unintelligibly articulated) impressions of the most meaningless thoughts that occur to me through the remainder of my existence. Or, the duller part of my office day.

If I can’t think of anything like that, then I guess I’ll just make an attempt at well collected ideas and drafted social commentary pertinent to the parlance of our apocalyptic and post-redemptive era. Also known at the latter half of 2008.

Things that are ultimately not important to know about me, but I believe are necessary for me to post due to the period of my life I am in include:

  •  I own two pairs of nearly identical corduroy pants, but often only wear one for up to two weeks semi-consecutively and adamantly claim that I change the pair I am wearing despite the fact that this is a poor and obvious lie.
  • My probation office has a fine rear.
  • I like coca-cola light better than coca-cola. My mother made me drink diet until I was like fifteen-ish, thus I never acquired a taste for coca-cola for the most part.
  • I run an underground and highly legal senior lawn bowling league on Tuesdays.

In conclusion, dig (slang for look below friend) some of the more material projects of art I find describe me during the first three years of my life, a brief period in sixth grade when I shaved my head, the end of eighth grade, most of high school, minus the times longer than two weeks in which I was sorta happy, and minus when I played any organized sport besides dodge ball and soccer (futbol to our latin american and chilean readers), and the last fifteen months. Don’t judge me. Judge my taste. Call me shallow, but these things are important.

Endtroducing….

30 07 2008

Hi, I’m vastventriloquism (or Zach), one of the authors of this blog. This is an informal introduction. Over the next week or so hopefully all the authors will write a similar post.

What I dislike most about blogs is what I dislike about 69 Love Songs, by the Magnetic Fields. There Stephin Merritt is convinced that any little idea (69 of them) that pops into his head is worthy of attention. Most blog authors, mutatis mutandis, suffer from the same problem.

That being said, I don’t claim that my posts here will be polished or publishable (which isn’t for me to decide in the first place). But I do hope they will contain ideas that are beyond first impressions.

Those ideas will be informed by the following basic facts: I’ve grown up in the Washington D.C. area. I’m a sophomore at a small east-coast liberal arts college. Here are some lists that should fill out a better impression of me. All are in no particular order and in no way definitive. My co-bloggers will make similar lists.

Movies:

Badlands

Apocalypse Now

Annie Hall

Albums:

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea – Neutral Milk Hotel

Born to Run – Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band

Somethin’ Else – Cannonball Adderley

Summerteeth – Wilco

Shelter from the Smoke – Bill Fox

The Disintegration Loops – William Basinski

Heart of the Congos – The Congos

Separation Sunday – The Hold Steady

Call Me – Al Green

Future Days – Can

Fill Up the Room – Saturday Looks Good To Me

Books:

Angle of Repose – Wallace Stegner

King Lear – William Shakespeare

An American Childhood – Annie Dillard

Collected Poems – Wallace Stevens

Underworld – Don DeLillo

I’m not thrilled with the lists of books or albums, but they are good enough. Welcome to the fabakis blog from vastventriloquism.
